Bagdasarov horizontal directed crystal growth process

Bagdasarov method, schematically presented in Fig.1, consists in the following: the crystallizing material (in the form of powder, crystal crackles or ceramics) placed in the boat-like crucible, is melted by moving the crucible through the heating zone, and then crystallized. To obtain a strictly oriented single crystal the single crystal seed is being mounted on the top of the crucible (boat) and both the seeding moment and the growth front form are being visually observed. As in this method the melt height is much smaller than its surface, there appear conditions of effective withdrawal of the impurities at the expense of evaporation. The same condition promotes decrease of intensity of convective flows that affect the level of the crystallization process stability. Besides, the open surface of the melt provides the opportunity to insert the activating impurity at any stage of crystallization. The above-stated advantages point to the essential difference of this method from that of, say Bridgman.

The Bagdasarov method allows to carry out repeated crystallization in case when additional chemical purification of the raw material is required. It is also possible to carry out a continuous crystallization process by directed shift of the crucible echelon through the crystallization zone. While realizing the Bagdasarov method it is technically easy to create a controlled temperature field that is extremely necessary for growth of high-perfect large-size single crystals. This method makes it possible to get large slabs with almost perfect edges and of any given crystallographic orientation.
